High Oaks Secondary

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a non-competitive award designed to develop interpersonal, life skills and independence.

Students will complete 3 sections at school while taking on the award;

Physical – completing regular physical planned activity. E.G. swimming, fitness circuits

Skill – learning or developing a skill. E.G. drawing, musical instrument

Volunteering – helping someone or their community. E.G. organising games for New Oaks students, helping garden the church

Students will then be invited to attend their expedition. During the summer term students will prepare for their expedition at school, going on local walks at different parks, put up and take down tents, roll out and up sleeping mats, put sleeping bags away and learn how to cook on camp stoves. On the expedition students will work as together to cook and clean for themselves and encouraged to be as independent as possible.

Last year we had 10 students complete their Bronze award. This year we are looking to extend this number and hope that many students in the 6th form will enjoy taking on this challenge.
