Sensory Programmes
Many of our students experience differences in how they process sensory information. At our school, we recognise the vital role sensory regulation plays in helping students feel calm, safe, and ready to learn.
Our Occupational Therapy (OT) team has specialist knowledge in this area. Some of our OTs are trained in Sensory Integration (SI), and all members of the team have a strong understanding of the different sensory systems and how these can affect learning, behaviour, and everyday functioning.
When a student’s sensory processing differences impact their ability to engage in daily activities or access the curriculum, the OT team may develop a sensory diet - a personalised plan of sensory activities designed to help them regulate and function at their best throughout the day. These plans are always tailored to the individual needs of each student.
In addition, the OT team may recommend specialist sensory equipment to support students’ regulation and participation. This might include tools such as bear hugger vests, ear defenders, or chew tools. Our school also has a dedicated sensory treatment space with suspended equipment, which some students use as part of their individual sensory programmes.
To ensure strategies are embedded throughout the day, school staff are trained by the OT team to carry out sensory programmes and use any recommended equipment confidently and safely. Students may also take part in sensory circuits - structured physical activities designed to help regulate alertness and attention. These too are implemented by trained school staff and monitored closely by the OT team to ensure they meet the individual needs of the student.
We place high value on staff understanding of sensory processing. Through regular training and ongoing support from the OT team, our staff are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to recognise and respond to sensory needs. This shared understanding helps create a safe, supportive environment where students can feel secure, be better understood, and access the strategies they need to thrive.
