Science
At Oaklands, we strive to provide an inclusive, engaging Science curriculum that ensure that learning experiences are not only meaningful but also relevant to our students' everyday lives. Using a range of methods, we nurture students' scientific curiosity and building a solid foundation of scientific knowledge and skills. Our approach considers individual starting points, fostering inclusivity and enjoyment in their scientific journey, and identifying individualised pathways for progress. The goal is to empower every student to become scientifically literate, curious, and confident individuals, equipped with the skills they need to understand the world around them and participate fully in society
Science at Oaklands has 4 main attainment areas:
A) Scientific Enquiry. Students learn how to ask questions, plan and conduct experiments, collect and analyse data, and draw conclusions based on evidence
B) Life & Living Processes. Students learn about the structure and function of plants and animals, how living things interact with their environment, and the processes of growth, reproduction, and adaptation
C) Materials & Their Properties. Students explore and learn about the properties of materials, how they can be changed or manipulated, and the processes involved in their production and use
D) Physical Processes. Students learn about the forces that act on objects, how energy is transferred and transformed, and the principles of motion and mechanics
In Primary, the weekly Science lessons are integrated across the curriculum through cross-curricular planning. This includes Science integrated beyond classroom, using mirrors, camera obscura, periscope making, exploring optical illusions, etc. Students are encouraged to develop their curiosity by learning through play and highly motivating resources.
