Some of our autistic pupils thrive in our SLD department or in our sixth form. Oaklands also has a growing ASD Department where the focus is on using specific strategies to enable pupils to access a full range of curriculum activities. In both Key Stages the students follow the National Curriculum.

In Key Stage 3 familiar subjects such as English, Maths, Science, ICT, Personal and Social Education, History, Geography, Music, Food and Design Technology, Performing Arts, P.E and Swimming will all be found on our students’ timetables.

As the students move into Key Stage 4 Vocational courses such as “Preparation for Work” are introduced. This is accredited through the National Open College Network.  AQA Accredited courses in Food Technology, Design Technology, Science and Art are also offered at Entry level in Key Stage 4.

Individual support can be accessed by those students who require Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Music and Play Therapy.

Students in both Key Stages also benefit from specialist facilities such as our Sensory Theatre, Ball Pool, Outdoor all weather pitch, state of the art Gym, Art Room, Specialist Science and Design Technology Rooms.

Where possible pupils access our wide range of curriculum facilities across the school. Where pupils have particular difficulties in transitioning we can tailor their timetable so that more of their learning takes place in their base classroom. Pupils have access to TEACCH strategies including individual schedules and to PECs and Intensive Interaction. All pupils with ASD are provided with speech and language therapy and occupational therapy.
